Furnaces are inherently dangerous. They are using combustible volatile materials at thousands of degrees. So furnace safety is a very important subject for any Denver HVAC tech to be knowledgeable. However the tech's task is hard because each manufacturer of heating equipment has different controls.

The first line of safety are the ignition controls. The largest manufacturer is Honeywell, but there are also proprietary ignition controls made by third party engineering companies. The biggest advance recently has been going away from standing pilot lights to now computerized controls that ignite the fuel only when it is needed. This increases efficiency dramatically because that light is not constantly sucking on the fuel supply. It also makes the interior more safe from carbon monoxide burned by the pilot and reduces the danger that the pilot could light any standing gas from another source.

These controls are pretty much standard on all HVAC equipment now. The only thing that still uses standing pilot lights are water heaters. Because there is not longer a constant flame in the base of the furnace, the manufacturers had to invent a new system of determining if the furnace is lit. The new system of determining if the furnace is on is called flame rectification. It uses a electric flame sensor to ensure that gas is not fed to the furnace until a heat source exists to ignite it. If there is a problem with these controls, the first thing your Denver furnace repairs technician will do is simply wipe down the sensor to clean it.

Other safety controls exist outside of the igniter. There should be a limit switch which detects if the furnace is operating beyond a certain temperature. This is a shutoff switch, so if your furnace mysteriously shuts off this is a possible reason. Hopefully it is just a problem with the sensor which could be easily fixed. In fact, usually the furnace will automatically reset itself after shutoff several times. If the overheating problem continues to occur, the solid state circuits may shut off the whole system until a HVAC service technician can come and inspect the system. However you cannot assume this because any problems involving furnace overheat are unquestionably serious. It is important to use a qualified and licensed heating company to do this kind of work because air handling units are becoming increasingly complicated. The average device now might have 4 separate safety controls the contractor needs to know about. Just jerry-rigging the device to bypass these controls is not an option.
