Why Do People Choose Not to Drive Diesel Engine Cars?
You might have read a number of articles praising diesel engines for being very practical and efficient. If that is the case, you might also be wondering how come people are driving more gasoline engine cars than that of the more practical diesel engine.
In the course of automobile history, diesel engine cars never really caught the passenger car market. There are historical issues, aside from some other logical reasons why the market choose gasoline cars over diesel engines.
Cars running on diesel engines might be very efficient when it comes to fuel consumption, but these cars tend to be noisier and produce more smoke. Unfortunately, despite that, most diesel engines are more expensive than those running on gasoline.
Diesel engines have higher compression ratios than a typical gasoline car, and these tend to come heavier too. Because of the higher weight and compression ratios, these tend to have lower maximum RPM ranges than comparable gasoline engines, resulting to higher torque than horsepower, thus slower in acceleration.
Diesel engines need to be fuel injected, but technology in the past was not that reliable and made fuel injection expensive. This also produced more smoke and had a funny smell. Another factor which did not take the diesel engine to the passenger car market is because diesel engines are nosier and would tend to vibrate.
During cold weather, a diesel engine would be more difficult to start. For diesel engines that have ‘glow plugs’, you have to wait for these to heat up before you can start the engine. Moreover, since diesel fuel is not readily available, people also tend to prefer gasoline cars for convenience in refueling.
Despite such disadvantages, many people still choose diesel engines for fuel economy. These engines also have longer life than gasoline driven engines. Such would translate to a large sum of savings as the longer the engine lasts, the more fuel savings you will accumulate. Such advantages eliminate all of the above-mentioned disadvantages of picking diesel engines over gasoline engines.
Considering the higher acquisition cost of a diesel engine compared to that of a gasoline engine, there would be a need to prolong this engine’s life in order for fuel economy advantage to overcome the high purchase price. If you have a diesel engine car, it is therefore important for you to make sure that you will be able to properly maintain your car to prolong its engine’s life.

Diesel Engine System Design $341.51 The diesel engine has been recognized as the most promising powertrain of the foreseeable future due to its superior thermal efficiency and reliability. Modern emission standards and customer demands have increased the need for advanced design theories for diesel engines. By focusing on engine performance and system integration, this book establishes the theory of diesel engine system design, including the approaches used in its modelling and analysis. "Diesel Engine" "System Design" links everything diesel engineers need to know about engine performance and system design in order to master all the essential topics quickly and apply the techniques to solve practical design problems. Part 1 provides detailed coverage of the fundamental concepts and generic techniques in diesel engine system design. It starts with the analytical design process followed by the theories on durability, reliability and optimization. Part 2 goes on to present the fundamentals of dynamic and static diesel engine system designs by introducing engine thermodynamic cycle and vehicle powertrain performance, followed by the critical boundary conditions for engine system design in the areas of combustions, emissions and aftertreatment. Part 3 explores dynamics, friction and NVH (noise, vibration and harshness), including a comprehensive coverage on valvetrain and piston assembly. Part IV proceeds with thermodynamic first and second law analyses on heat rejection and air system including EGR and turbocharging, followed by transient performance and engine controls before summarizing subsystem interaction and system specification design. With its distinguished author "Diesel Engine System Design" will benefit a broad range of engineering professionals in different disciplines and provide them with a systematic understanding of how engine system design specifications are generated. It will also introduce engine design knowledge to academic researchers and enable system design engineers to directly apply the methods and working knowledge to their daily design and research. |

Jatropha Oil for Diesel Engine Application $127.45 This study examined suitable areas for growing Jatropha plants and focused on the improvement of Jatropha oil as an alternative fuel for diesel engine. To examine land suitability for Jatropha cultivation, this study examined case studies in Suphanburi province, Thailand by classifying land use from landsat5 TM. Then, GIS based spatial multiple criteria decisionmaking analysis was used to identify suitable land for Jatropha cultivation. Analytical Hierarchical Processing (AHP) was used to weight multifactor priority model for land suitability for Jatropha cultivation. The results were obtained that the marginally suitable area for Jatropha cultivation in Suphanburi is 3,569.02 sq.km and 1,577.70 sq.km. and 211.29 sq.km. for highly suitable and moderately suitabille area respectively. The results found that viscosity of 5 10 of Jatropha blends can be acceptable according to the ASTM standard. For using Jatropha oil (pure), the fuel should be heat more than 100 Celsius before directly used in engine. The study revealed that blending with 510 of Jatropha oil can be used directly in diesel engine without any modification or preheating. Aircraft Diesel Engine by Jody, Iosias [Paperback] $122.67 Please note that the content of this book primarily consists of articles available from Wikipedia or other free sources online. The aircraft diesel engine or aero diesel has not been widely used as an aircraft engine. Diesel engines were used in airships and were tried in aircraft in the late 1920s and 1930s, but never caught on in a major fashion. Its main advantage is its excellent specific fuel consumption and the somewhat higher density of its fuel, but these advantages have been outweighed by combination of its inherent disadvantages compared to gasolinefueled or turboprop engines, and the accidents of history. The everrising cost of avgas and doubts about its future availability have spurred a resurgence in aircraft diesel engine production in recent years.
