The national average price for diesel fuel climbed another 3.7 cents to $2.313 per gallon in the week ending June 20, according to the Energy Information Administration. That's up a whopping 61 cents from prices the same week in 2004. The Central Atlantic region saw the biggest spike, with prices there rising 4.3 cents to $2.451 per gallon. New England wasn't far behind at $2.442 per gallon, while the Lower Atlantic region saw prices rise to $2.296 per gallon. Overall, the East Coast average climbed 4 cents to $2.348 per gallon. California posted the highest prices, with an average of $2.476 per gallon. The rest of the West Coast came in at $2.391 per gallon. The Rocky Mountain region posted the lowest prices, though even there the average rose 2.7 cents to $2.236 per gallon. Prices in the Midwest rose to $2.294 per gallon, while the Gulf Coast came in at $2.274 per gallon. Experts say the price of fuel is expected to continue on the heels of record-setting crude oil prices.
The trucker shutdown on April 1, 2008 was a drastic step designed to try to fight the rising cost of diesel fuel that is seriously reducing the income of American truckers. The drivers, owner/operators in most cases, are not making enough profit to pay for the cost of operating their trucks. Just the cost of buying a big rig can exceed $100,000, without the added expense of maintaining the vehicle. Many small trucking companies have already given up due to the inability to meet today's higher operating costs. The purpose of the continuing plans for trucker shutdowns are not to penalize fellow Americans; it is simply to focus attention on the importance of trucking to the American economy and to request help through some relief from the federal fuel tax for big rigs traveling the nation's highways.
Diesel prices are escalating, rising by nearly a dollar per gallon over the last three months. As the cost of petroleum fuel escalates, shrewd fleet operators and drivers of diesel passenger cars are finding it even more economical to convert to water gas. Now they can save money as they operate their trucks and reduce their carbon output. Operating cost savings can be as high as 11% and drivers find it an easy way to keep the total cost per mile down. The savings using water gas are generated by improved fuel economy and reduced maintenance costs, as follows:
-- A 3-7% increase in fuel economy saves 12 to 28 cents per gallon
-- The 50% greater interval between oil changes saves 4 to 6 cents per gallon
-- Savings on emissions retesting fees saves 1.5 cents per gallon
-- Extended fuel injector and fuel pump life saves up to 1.25 cents per gallon
-- Extended engine overhaul intervals save up to 3.5 cents per gallon
