The Paint Detective PD8 is a paint thickness gauge that can be used on both steel and aluminum panels, which is an essential feature as cars can be manufactured from either metal and it would be highly ineffective if the device could only be used on certain vehicles. It operates on four triple A batteries and comes complete with a leather carry pouch/belt clip, two calibration check pieces and four thickness check foils, although it should be noted that the gauge does come pre-calibrated.

Paint thickness gauges are commonly used by vehicle buyers, vehicle bodywork repairers and vehicle detailers to either check if a car has had any previous body repairs, or to measure the thickness of the paintwork before attempting any restorative work like wet sanding or heavy machine polishing.

Paint & bodywork repairs can easily be missed when checking by eyesight or touch only and so the Paint Detective PD8 can provide you with essential indicative information regarding the history of a car prior to purchase. Before undertaking any restorative work the thickness of the paint should be measured to access how much material can safely be removed without risking either completely rubbing or burning through the surface and causing permanent damage.

The gauge requires a minimum measuring area of 6mm and a minimum sample thickness of 0.3mm and features a measuring range of 0-1250 um / 0-50 mil. The metric units of measurement it provides are microns (1/1000 mm) and should be used when accessing paint thickness prior to any restoration work and the imperial units of measurement provided are mils (1/1000 inch) and should be used when checking to see if a car has had any previous body repairs.

The Paint Detective PD8 is quick and easy to use, a practical size, robust and well constructed.
