Everyone likes it when they can save a little money off their everyday expenses, especially when it comes to motoring. With the cost of fuel continuing to rise, driving has become more expensive then ever. You should also get into the habit of checking your engine's oil levels on a frequent basis to ensure that they are at the required levels. A healthy engine will function better and result in a superior drive. Check your tyre pressures to make sure they are at the right levels for the type of journey you are making and the load of the car. Driving with under-inflated tyres will result in more rolling resistance and use more fuel. The correct measurements for your vehicle's tyre pressure will be available in your car's handbook. Try and lighten the load for your day to day driving. This means removing things from your car that are not required for that journey.

Extra weight in the boot or the body of the car will result in needing to use more fuel. Roof racks and boxes should be removed if there are not being used as they create wind resistance, which also increases fuel consumption. Try and plan your journey in advance so that you don't get lost or get stuck in slow moving traffic. If you have to run a number of small errands try and combine them so you are making one trip rather than several. When on the road drive smoothly, accelerating gently and avoid any unnecessary braking. Read the road so that you can predict when you will need to slow down and you can do so softly and if possible keep the car rolling. Harsh braking and stop / start driving will result in more fuel being used.

If you are driving a manual car then move up through the gears as soon as possible without the labouring the engine. Reduce your use of your car's air conditioning, as at low speeds there is a noticeable increase in the amount of fuel required to power these systems. Stick to the speed limits for the road you are on. The faster you are driving the more fuel you will use. For example driving at 70 mph uses up to 9% more fuel than driving at 60mph and 15% more than driving at 50mph. These simple steps if followed correctly will help you to drive with higher fuel efficiency and reduce those all important bills.
