Although they are very dangerous and destructive, a raging fire in your home is also avoidable. Here are five guidelines to keep your family and home safe from fire.
First, make sure there are "no smoking" areas in your home. Smoking in inappropriate areas of the home is the cause of many home fire deaths. Designate "No Smoking" areas for beds and couches. Although comfortable, beds and couches are generally made of flammable materials that can easily ignite by the lit cigarette of a snoozing smoker.
Second, watch the heat in the kitchen. Never leave an in-use stove, open flame, or fryer unattended. Use your fire extinguisher, not water, to put out a grease fire. If the fire is in a pot, turn off the heat and cover the put with its lid. Avoid getting burned by hot food by turning pot handles inward.
Thirdly, use smoke detectors. Install smoke detectors throughout your home, making sure that you have at least one on each level of your home. It is just as important to test your smoke detectors once a month. Nearly a third of smoke detectors in homes are not working properly. It is easier to replace a smoke detector battery than a home.
Next, be aware of cords in your home. Move cords away from wet areas, such as sinks and wet cooking areas, as well as hot items, such as radiators and stoves. Don't plug too many appliances into the same power strip or extension cord. Have a professional replace worn or damaged cords on appliances.
Finally, avoid heat hazards. Make sure ashes from wood stoves and chimneys are removed with a metal container. Have chimneys and wood stoves professionally cleaned and inspected yearly, even if they are not used very often. Keep heating devices at least three feet from walls and anything flammable.
