How To Improve Your Fuel Economy Whilst Driving

If you spend any time at all researching this topic you will quickly discover that everyone has their own ideas. Some people say one thing works other people say it does not work, you get the picture. In truth it is almost impossible to give accurate results because everyone of us is different, we each drive differently and we each own a different vehicle so there are no definitive answers. However, that said, there are certain things that you can do that will improve the fuel economy of your vehicle, I just can not tell you by how much because that will be down to your situation as described above.

Right, the tactics that I have listed here are what I did in my car and they are the savings that I made. I will point out that I live in the UK and do most of my driving on an island where the road speed is 20, 30 or 40 mph with the occasional 60mph. I did travel to the mainland and do some motorway driving just for thoroughness. (70mph for our US cousins.)

 
1. Driving more moderately.

This involves trying to drive as smoothly as possible with no aggressive acceleration or braking. Coasting to a stop where possible and pulling away smoothly from a standing start. I found the best way to monitor how I was doing was to have my dashboard readout tell me what my fuel consumption was constantly. I have since read elsewhere that constant monitoring like this is accepted as another way of improving performance. Improvement of 31%

2. Reducing the speed at which you drive.

 
This was what I went to the mainland for. I had noticed when I spent a lot of time driving hire vans that you could watch the fuel gauge drop if you pushed your speed up but that if you stuck under 65mph the economy improved. In my car on a one hundred mile journey my improvement was 12%

3. Tyre pressure set to at least the recommended level.

I had to monitor this for a month to get a grip on the figures, but by checking my tyre pressure every time I got fuel and ensuring that they did not drop below the manufacturers recommended levels my fuel economy improved by 10%

4. Air con off, windows down.

This is one of the most contentious claims out there, however, my results over last summer showed that, on the island driving at lower speeds, turning the air con off and opening my window gave a 5% improvement in my fuel economy. I believe that at higher speeds there is evidence to suggest that air con on windows closed is better, but  I did not have the chance to test this.

5. Remove all excess weight and roof racks etc from your car.

Every excess pound in weight you carry eats into your fuel economy so if you do not need that full scale tool box in the boot leave it at home! If you are not using your roof rack or roof box, put it in your garage until you do need it. I got rid of the excess weight in my car and over a month my improvement was another 2%

All told i managed to improve my fuel economy by about 60%! In this day and age with prices rising these results were fantastic! Most modern cars will be capable of providing you with similar results so get out there and start seeing what you can achieve!
