Oil-water separators are used in many different commercial applications and are often a necessary piece of technology on many construction and facilities. These devices skillfully remove harmful chemical elements, like oil but others as well, which allows the remaining water to be returned back into the water system, usually after further treatment. Both large and small-scale units are often required by law to prevent harm to the environment and so many companies may use these products as a matter of course when doing business. Regardless of the actual size of the unit, these products all work using essentially the same principles.
As the old saying implies, oil and water do not mix. Fortunately, companies and other industrial facilities can use this to their advantage to remove oil from water. Though they may not mix, oil can become well distributed in water and unlike other debris, it cannot be simply filtered out like dirt and other substances. Instead a process that takes advantage of the different viscosities is necessary to perform the separation. This requires both time and skillful agitation of the water is required in order ensure a high cleansing of the water.
To remove oil, the water is rested and the oil is allowed to float to the surface. This oil is then gently pushed off of the surface of the water into appropriate storage containers. After this process the water is further drained through filters before it is sent the proper treatment facilities or delivered back into the sewer system to be further treated. Usually, water used in industrial capacities is not only dirty with oil, but also other substances as well. Larger machines allow the heavy particles (dirt, grime, etc.) to settle at the bottom as the oil rises to the surface. This material is then siphoned off with a pump without disturbing the water. These two processes provide a general cleaning of the water to make it environmentally safe for further treatment.
Many different sizes are available depending upon the application needed. Large industrial sites that mix oil and water, like refineries use these machines regularly. However, smaller construction sites may use these machines to help cleanse run-off water that occurs near heavy machinery. Specialized pumps and other pressure devices are often used in conjunction with these products in order to speed up the process. Different manner of filters are also used to greatly improve the quality of the outgoing water.
