Are video games still fun?
In the past 20 years we have seen advancement in technology that has shifted the development of video games to be more focused on graphics and sound. This shift by major studios has had a dramatic impact on the how we play video games. The games do look better, sound better, and play better but are games actually more fun? This is a simple question to think about and the motive behind the question is not to ruffle any feathers but to bring light the importance of game design. Like any movie, no matter how big the budget is, if the script is not good people will wait to watch the movie when it is released on rentals.
So, are video games more fun now? I have enjoyed great games in the past such as Space Quest, King's Quest, MYST, and Wing Commander. These are classic PC games that were well designed, entertaining, and that fueled the growth of the video game entertainment industry in the past. These games were simple, fun, and innocent. Now, as we approach the year 2010, there has been great progress in graphics and sound that make games look photo realistic and really bring the player into the game. There have been some great games like Halo, Gears of War, John Madden Football, NBA 2K, Final Fantasy, Super Mario Kart, and Grand Theft Auto that has really pushed the video game industry forward. These games are very fun and well designed. Now, with the internet moving to Web 2.0 and the advancement of fiber optics and cable modem delivering large amounts of information at high speeds has open the door of playing sophisticated flash games over the internet. A lot of developers big and small have taken notice of the popularity of flash games over the internet.
These developers have incorporated development of flash games into their portfolio and are now the driving force of creativity that is fueling the growth of the arcade industry over the internet. The arcade industry that has been decimated by the console video game system is now seeing resurgence on the internet. A startup arcade website that is growing very rapidly. So, are video games still fun? The answer is "Yes".

Halo: The Flood $103.56 Halo: The Flood is a 2003 novel based on the 2001 Xbox video game Halo: Combat Evolved written by William C. Dietz. Closely depicting the events of the video game, The Flood begins with the escape of a human ship Pillar of Autumn from enemy aliens known as the Covenant. When the Pillar of Autumn unexpectedly discovers a massive artifact known as Halo, the humans must square off against the Covenant and a second terrifying force in a desperate attempt to uncover Halos secrets and stay alive. Though the book roughly follows the same events of the Xbox game, featuring identical dialogue, Dietz also describes events not seen by the games protagonist, the supersoldier Master Chief. After the success of the first Halo novel, Halo: The Fall of Reach, publisher Del Ray and Halo publisher Microsoft signed a deal for new books based on Xbox games, including another entry in the Halo series. Del Ray approached author Dietz to write the next book. Dietz incorporated his firsthand experience in the military for the additional scenes of The Flood not found in the game. Halo: Uprising $95.59 Halo: Uprising is a fourissue American comic book limited series set in the Halo universe. The series was written by Brian Michael Bendis, illustrated by Alex Maleev, and published by Marvel Comics. Uprising tells a story set between the ending of the 2004 video game Halo 2 and the beginning of its sequel, Halo 3, as Earth is under attack by a collective of alien races known as the Covenant. The series was intended to be released and concluded before Halo 3 shipped on September 25, 2007, but the final issue did not appear until April 2009. The series was brought together by Ruwan Jayatilleke, Marvels Vice President of Development. He attained the license to publish Halo comics, including the singlevolume Halo Graphic Novel, in 2005. The graphic novels critical and commercial success prompted Marvel to announce a new Halo limited series in 2006 with Jayatilleke serving as the series editor. Flood (Halo) $100.37 The Flood are fictional parasitic alien life forms in Bungies Halo video game series. They are introduced in Halo: Combat Evolved as a second enemy faction alongside the Covenant, and return in Halo 2, Halo 3, and Halo Wars to fill the same role. The Flood are driven by a desire to infect any sentient life they encounter, and are depicted as such a threat that the ancient Forerunners were forced to kill themselves and all other sentient life nearly 100,000 years before the beginning of Halo in an effort to starve the Flood to death. The Floods design and fiction was spearheaded by Bungie artist Robert McLees, who utilized unused concepts from the earlier Bungie game Marathon 2. The ringworld Halo was stripped of many of its large creatures to make the Floods appearance more startling. Bungie environment artist Vic DeLeon spent six months of preproduction time refining the Floods fleshy aesthetic and designing the organic interiors of Flood based space ships for Halo 3. Author: Miller, Frederic P./ Vandome, Agnes F./ McBrewster, John Binding Type: Paperback Number of Pages: 160 Publication Date: 2010/07/25 Language: English Dimensions: 5.98 x 9.01 x 0.37 inches |

Halo and Philosophy $19.95 Since the Doom series, First Person Shooter (FPS) videogames have ricocheted through the gaming community, often reaching outside that community to the wider public. While critics primarily lampoon FPSs for their aggressiveness and on-screen violence, gamers see something else. Halo is one of the greatest, most successful FPSs ever to grace the world of gaming. Although Halo is a FPS, it has a science-fiction storyline that draws from previous award-winning science fiction literature. It employs a game mechanic that limits the amount of weapons a player can carry to two, and a multiplayer element that has spawned websites like Red vs. Blue and games within the game created by players themselves. Halo ’s unique and extraordinary features raise serious questions. Are campers really doing anything wrong? Does Halo ’s music match the experience of the gamer? Would Plato have used Halo to train citizens to live an ethical life? What sort of Artificial Intelligence exists in Halo and how is it used? Can the player’s experience of war tell us anything about actual war? Is there meaning to Master Chief’s rough existence? How does it affect the player’s ego if she identifies too strongly with an aggressive character like Master Chief? Is Halo really science fiction? Can Halo be used for enlightenment-oriented thinking in the Buddhist sense? Does Halo 's weapon limitation actually contribute to the depth of the gameplay? When we willingly play Halo only to die again and again, are we engaging in some sort of self-injurious behavior? What is expansive gameplay and how can it be informed by the philosophy of Michel Foucault? In what way does Halo ’s post-apocalyptic paradigm force gamers to see themselves as agents of divine deliverance? What can Red vs. Blue teach us about personal identity? These questions are tackled by writers who are both Halo cognoscenti and active philosophers, with a foreword by renowned Halo fiction author Fred Van Lente and an afterword by leading games scholar and artist Roger Ngim. |

Halo Wars $103.56 Halo Wars is a realtime strategy (RTS) video game developed by Ensemble Studios and published by Microsoft Game Studios for the Xbox 360 video game console. It was released in Japan and Australia on February 26, 2009, in PAL territories on February 27, and in North America on March 3. Halo Wars was officially unveiled at the X06 Xbox show in 2006.
