Some notable conventions have established requirements that all marine operations companies must heed. For example, the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS) calls for the restriction of combustible materials and the inclusion of fire-extinguishing equipment, especially on board oil tankers.

Likewise, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) set release dates for the phasing out of old oil tankers. The dates depend on the ships' deadweight tonnage (DWT) capacity and the anniversary dates of their maiden voyage.

Other measures target specific tankers, especially the ones with a minimum of 20,000 DWT. For instance, inert gas from the tanker's boiler flue is a safer alternative to the old flammable gas that crew used to load into tanks.

There is always room for improvement in tanker operations, and thankfully, these same measures are continually being amended for the good of everyone involved.
