Fire is the most important and dangerous element in nature. Man was able to use it to his advantage several millennia ago. Fire cooks food, keeps our houses warm in winter, and produces light during dark moonless nights. Nonetheless, it does not only burn things; it destroys houses, properties and lives. It has been reported that 85% of deaths resulting from fire accidents occur in homes. Hence, it is only proper that fire prevention efforts be in order. It is imperative that all institutions and establishments should have fire fighting equipment ready in case of unfortunate accidents.
Fire is a hazard. At any given time, it can endanger human life and ruin property. In most instances, such unfortunate incidents occur as a result of negligence and even though authorities have spent so much effort educating people and informing everyone about prevention, we still see burned down houses, apartments, and buildings.
The first thing people should do is educate themselves about how fire is generated and the elements that keep it alive. The classic knowledge says fire is produced when there is enough heat, fuel and oxygen. The appropriate combination of these three factors would produce fire. Elimination of any of these factors would, therefore, extinguish flames. But in case of large fires, extinguishing of fire is not easy. This could start anywhere - in the kitchen, in chemical laboratories, in factories, in production areas, and anywhere else. Then it spreads radically to any direction and could kill and injure people and render everything to ashes.
In many countries, the installation of industrial fire fighting equipment in establishments is imperative. All buildings and institutions are also subject to engineering and structural inspections to ensure fire safety mechanisms. Fire drills are also regularly taught to employees of many offices and to students of many schools and institutions. Such drills are important to train everyone in case of emergencies. People should learn the basics when under such urgent situations. They should know emergency hotlines to call. Moreover, it is not enough to have fire safety gears and equipment. People should know how to use them. They would render useless to people who do not know how to use them when the situation arises.
On the other hand, house fires are often caused by incorrectly placed and defective kitchen stoves and faulty electrical wiring. Hence, better have your stoves, gas range, and LPG tanks checked for leaks. Also having curtains and flammable materials near sources of flame is not appropriate. Note further that approximately fifteen percent of house fire accidents occur as a result of lit cigarette sticks improperly disposed of. Smokers should, therefore, watch where they throw their cigarette. Children should be taught about the dangers of playing with matches and lighters. Candles should never be left lit. Appliances should be unplugged when everyone leaves home. Also regularly check wirings for worn out insulation. Furthermore, flammable liquids should be stored outdoors and must be kept in tightly closed containers. These reminders are but basic.
Fires do not just happen inland. Several maritime fire incidents are reported annually. Such accidents happen due to overheated machinery, electrical problems unchecked and internal explosions caused by various factors. Such fires may destroy the entire ship. This is why all ships have and should have advanced marine fire fighting equipment. But in most cases fire is preventable with proper information, measures, strategies and equipment. The crew should undergo fire drills. It is quite important to study ship structure and operations to pin down weak and hazard spots so as to deal about them more effectively and prevent future accidents. As earlier implied a large percentage of uncontrolled fire is due to human negligence. When the basic tasks are left undone, grim events happen in just a blink of an eye.

US Marine Corps Tanks of World War II $13.99 The US Marine Corps formed six tank battalions in World War II which saw combat in some of the most varied and extreme conditions of the Pacific theater. The Marine tank battalions fought on small coral atolls such as Tarawa, in the fetid jungles of the south west Pacific including Guadalcanal, in the lush central Pacific islands of the Marianas such as Saipan and Guam, and on the volcanic deserts of the Bonin islands such as Iwo Jima. The tank equipment of the Marine Corps was essentially the same as that used by the US Army: the M3 and M5A1 light tanks, and the M4 Sherman medium tanks. But the conditions and the opponent forced the Marine Corps to adapt both in terms of technical and tactical innovations. The numerous island landings forced the development of novel landing equipment, especially deep wading equipment to get the tanks safely ashore. Japanese defensive tactics in 1943-44 put a premium on American use of flamethrowers and the development of a variety of flamethrower tanks on the M3 light tank chassis. Deadly Japanese close-infantry tactics forced the development of novel methods of tank protection including the use of wooden armor to defeat the use of magnetic anti-tank devices. This book will examine the Marine use of tanks in World War II and the tactics and technology that made their experiences so unique in the annals of tank warfare. |

Tokyo Tanks $109.93 High Quality Content by WIKIPEDIA articles Tokyo tanks were internallymounted selfsealing fuel tanks used in the B17 Flying Fortress bomber during World War II. Although nicknamed Tokyo tanks to dramatically illustrate the significant range they added to the B17 (approximately 40 greater with combat weights), it was also an exaggeration in that no B17 ever had the range to bomb Japan from any base in World War II. These fuel tanks consisted of eighteen removable rubberizedcompound containers, called cells, installed inside the main wings of the airplane, nine to each side. The main wings of the B17 consisted of an inboard wing mounted to the fuselage and mounting the engines and flaps, and an outboard wing joined to the inboard wing and carrying only the ailerons. The Marine (DVD) $22.75 John Cena of the WWE stars in this barrelhouse brawler of a film as John Triton, a marine who gets discharged after he disobeys orders while rescuing prisoners in Iraq. Now he`s back home in South Carolina with his wife, Kate (Kelly Carlson), and a lame security job. Meanwhile, a gang of colorfully violent jewel thieves knock over a diamond business and blow a police car 30 feet in the air while making their getaway. John and Kate are driving out in their SUV for a weekend in the mountains and wind up at the same gas station as the robbers. Shots get fired, the fuel tanks explode, and the bad guys hightail it out of there--with Kate as a hostage. Triton must now use his formidable marine training to track the bad guys via car chase, boat chase, and knife-in-hand swamp-stalking. Despite the rampant violence, this is suitable for the WWE fanbase, as it downplays the blood and death and ups the quotient of sucker punches, throwing guys through walls, and leaping away from fireball explosions in slow motion. Robert Patrick plays the lead bad guy, shrugging off wry in-jokes about his role in TERMINATOR 2 while he shoots witnesses. Abigail Bianca is the evil girl in the gang--she and Kate get to have a fight of their own before it`s all over. Fortunately Cena manages to hold his own onscreen amid the amusing dialogue and flying fists, making for a satisfying addition to the ranks of action heroes. |

The Marine $9.99 A rousing new Marine Corps adventure from the author of the New York Times bestselling Warning of War and The Marines of Autumn The Marine is Colonel James ("Oliver") Cromwell, a warrior forged at Notre Dame and the Berlin of Hitler's Olympics, and honed by combat at Guadalcanal as one of Carlson's Marine Raiders. With the world at peace, the thirty-five-year old Cromwell is restlessly, if pleasantly, beached on garrison duty in California, aware of how much he misses the war, when he is ordered to fresh duty beyond the seas, as military attaché to the American ambassador in a dull Asian backwater half a world away. There, at dawn on a June Sunday, Ollie gets his wish for action. Korea violently erupts and Colonel Cromwell is caught up in the early, panicked, rout. While South Koreans cut and run, the first GIs hurried into battle are brushed aside by advancing Red tanks and tough peasant infantry. The Marine chronicles the war-hardened Cromwell's experience of the dramatic First Hundred Days of a brutal three-year Korean War, the chaos and cowardice of retreat, the last-ditch gallantry of the Pusan Perimeter, MacArthur’s brilliant left hook sending Marines against the deadly seawall at Inchon, and the bloody assault to liberate Seoul and promote MacArthur's 1952 presidential ambitions. Ollie Cromwell’s is the story of a "forgotten war" that never truly ended, but for a bitter truce along what a recent U.S. president called "the most dangerous border in the world." In The Marine , James Brady crafts a powerful novel of one man’s service to his country and Corps. |

And the Hippos Were Boiled in Their Tanks (Paperback) $22.79 A collaborative detective novel by Beat icons Jack Kerouac and William Burroughs, AND THE HIPPOS WERE BOILED IN THEIR TANKS was inspired by the real-life murder by their New York drinking buddy Lucien Carr, a brilliant Rimbaud-loving teenager who ended up killing his longtime homosexual stalker in Riverside Park and throwing the body into the Hudson River. Kerouac and Burroughs took turns writing chapters, with Burroughs writing about a bartender turned detective and Kerouac about a dissolute ex-Merchant Marine. Despite the murder mystery element, for the most part this novel describes the sordid, dreary lifestyle of restless young men living in New York at the end of World War II. First published in 2008, AND THE HIPPOS WERE BOILED IN THEIR TANKS is a decidedly amateur work, and the writing is a far cry from the distinctive voices the two writers would later develop, but it remains an intriguing literary relic from the early days of the Beat movement. |
