It's finally great riding weather here in the Midwest; I didn't think it would ever get here. That means vacation can't be far behind. Before you hit the road, I've got a few tips to make the trip a great time.
1. Before you can go anywhere, you've got to make sure your ride is good to go. Check the oil, plugs and fuel filter and change them if it's been awhile. Check and adjust your chain or belt tension, too. Check your tires for excess wear using the penny test - insert the penny into the treads so that Lincoln is upside down. If you can see the top of old Abe's head, it's time for new rubber. Tires can be pricey, but how much is your skin worth? Take a once around to check all the lights and make sure all the fasteners are tight. Now you're ready to go.
2. It's time to pack your bags. Take what you need but be sure you need what you're taking. Remember, this is a bike trip, not a beauty pageant. Do you really need a curling iron? Take double duty products like foundation with a sunscreen, shampoo/conditioner combos, and photosensitive riding glasses. Take trial-size toiletries; if you run out there's probably a drug store nearby. Don't pack extras you "might" need. You can get aspirin, gum, and lots of other stuff at a gas stop if you need to. If you take a lot of prescriptions, get a daily dose box instead of carting around all the bottles and pack a few extra doses just to be sure. That's all the little stuff; now about the clothes. Who says you can't wear the same jeans on two different days? Lingerie and t-shirts can be washed out in a motel sink at night and will usually dry by morning. 3. Pack light and load evenly. If you follow tip #2, you've already packed light, but you need to be sure your load is balanced and placed as low on the bike as possible. An unbalanced or top heavy load just begs for trouble, because either will change the center of gravity and affect the handling of your motorcycle. Also be sure your load is secure. I once had a helmet jump off my bike and commit suicide on I-75 because it wasn't strapped securely. Fortunately, the only injury was to the helmet, but it could have been much worse if it had hit another bike or a car's windshield.
4. Time to hit the road, but don't be in a hurry. Remember, this is a vacation, so relax. Make frequent stops to walk around, get gas, eat or drink something. Allow yourself extra time to reach your destination by guaranteeing any reservations for late arrival. Take the scenic route instead of the interstate. Take time to enjoy the ride and the people you're traveling with.
5. Ship stuff home. If you buy too many souvenirs or other items too large to pack, ship them. I've even had friends who shipped their dirty laundry home! This will allow you to pack light and load evenly all the way home.
