Car gauges are instruments, devices, and components used for measuring and determining the essentials of cars like the dimensions, speed, pressure, temperature, and speed. There are many types of gauges that come in different size, shape, colors, and technology. Each has its own functions and principle of operation but when fitted to a car all play a significant role in the smooth functioning of a car.

The modern day car is featured with various different gauges but the most significant among them are as follows:

Speedometer

This is the most important component or a gauge fixed into the car to indicate and display the instantaneous speed. The instrument is powered by a cable that is connected at one end with the speedometer and at the other end with the speedometer gear in the transmission. When the engine turns over, the driveshaft makes the wheel spin round and also pushes the speedometer cable to turn. This turn over, spins a magnet fixed inside the speed cup that further produces eddy current. The produced current also spins the speed cup that turns the pointer up the dial in the speedometer display. This display indicates the speed of the car.

Fuel Gauge

A fuel gauge is a device fitted in the car dashboard that functions to indicate the fuel level in the fuel tank of the car. The device comprises of two essential components, the sending unit and the indicator. The sending unit measures the fuel level by receiving the signal of low fuel from the float connected to a potentiometer. As the tank empties, the float drops down indicating that the fuel has gone below the certain specified level. When this happens, the current passes from the sending unit to the indicator that displays a signal of low fuel level.

Temperature Gauge

This gauge functions to measure the temperature of the engine. It takes care of the engine coolant and ensures smooth functioning of the engine as well as the car. When the car is starts the engine is cold and after some time the temperature rises. It is very important to monitor the temperature of the engine coolant because overheating of the car's engine can be harmful in many ways.

Tachometer

Tachometer is an instrument that is used in the car dashboard to measure the revolutions per minute of the engine drive shaft. This is truly significant for a car because monitoring the engine RPM (revolutions per minute) is important in order to ensure smooth functioning of the engine in the long run. If the engine runs at excessively high rates then its life and its performance can be lowered down to a great extent. Maintaining a perfect RPM delivers best acceleration and excellent fuel efficiency.
