Buying a used fishing boat in many ways is better than buying new. Although boats depreciate like cars, the average fishing boat spends most of its time on land, not in use. This means in general it is still relatively new. However, if you are in the market to buy a used fishing boat there are some things you need to look for before you buy.
Here a some issues to watch out for:
CRACKS & CORROSION
If you're looking to buy a fibreglass boat look for cracks in the hull. Other than obvious superficial wear and tear, look for small cracks in the stern of the boat. Particularly those along joints. This may suggest early sign of structural damage between cross members and the sides of the boat. Look beyond cracks in the gel coat for deeper ones. If obvious repair has been performed, ask for receipts for the work done to confirm it was performed by a professional.
For aluminium boats the issue is corrosion and welding joint cracks. Aluminium will naturally form a thin layer of oxidation as part of its reaction to oxygen. This is normal. It is the points where a dissimilar metal, usually steel, has been in constant contact with the aluminium. In a nutshell this will cause corrosion of the aluminium. A subject for another article.
PATCHWORK
For fibreglass boats, stand back a little and look at the hull generally for uneven or large discolored areas. This is a possible sign of repair to a major accident. Question the seller on this to see if our suspicions are valid.
INTERNAL RUST LINES
If the fishing boat has a cabin, take a close look deep inside for rust marks where there shouldn't be. This could be a sign that the fishing boat may have been submerged or there water is finding it way in where it shouldn't be.
LOOK UNDERNEATH
Lift up any items that are sitting on the deck. If you see staining or rust marks may indicate the fishing boat isn't being cleaned and maintained regularly.
USE YOUR NOSE
Take a sniff inside the cabin. Do you smell mould? or Does it smell musty? If so, water is getting in where it shouldn't
BILGE PUMP, FUEL FILTER
Check the bilge pump, battery and fuel filter for correct operation. If the bilge pump is automatic, make sure it starts when water is present. Check no water is in the fuel filter. If there is, then water is getting in the fuel line or the fuel tank is compromised.
BATTERY, LIGHTS
Are the batteries charged? Do all navigation lights work correctly?
FOR OUTBOARD MOTORS
Make sure the prop shaft has no play. A wobbly shaft may indicate worn bearings. Is the horsepower suitable for the craft? Check the specifications for the particular hull and understand what the maximum power plant it can handle. An over powered hull will begin to structurally fail at the transom.
Buying a used fishing boat doesn't have to be a potential minefield. Focus on ensuring all the main elements - Hull, Motor and Safety equipment are in good working order. Other items although important are not critical to the function of the fishing boat and can be easily repaired or replaced. If there are a few small items that need attention use them as bargaining power to drive the asking price down.
