Most tourist attractions in Europe focus on the historic, artistic or natural interests of people. Tuscany in Italy is no different but it has an added attraction that is truly bizarre: the Museo della Tortura in San Gimignano.

Yes, this is a museum of medieval torture devices. It is fittingly located in the Torre del Diavolo (Devil's Tower) at San Gimignano's Piazza della Cisterna. Since it opened in 1992, the museum (which is also known as the Museum of Medieval Criminology) has enjoyed growing popularity as people discover the 100 artifacts on display, guaranteed to give you the creeps.

One of the more benign items is the mask. These punished the wearer by being shaped like pig and other animal faces. Crueler versions had spikes inside and a mechanism in which a ball was inserted into the wearer's mouth to stop the inevitable screams.

Not painful enough for you? How about the heretic's fork? It's a large metal forked piece secured to the neck so that the tines pierced a subject under the chin and on the chest. This caused discomfort without piercing vital organs, so the pain could last longer.

Still not painful enough? There's still the cat's paw: An iron claw that would be used to scrape the skin of prisoners who were suspended from ropes. Prisoners often bled to death from this instrument and most fainted at the very least. The iron claw could be used on most parts of the body.

Another piece of horror was called the Garotte. A prisoner's neck was bound with a rope that was in turn tied to a pole in the ground. Another pole tightened the rope, not only causing asphyxiation but also crushing the spine. Death could either come slowly or instantly.

An even grizzlier device is the saw, which was used to cut or even amputate limbs. One way in this was used was to have the prisoner hung upside down while his or her body was cut in half starting at the groin and working toward the head. The person usually remained conscious throughout, unless the femoral artery was cut.

Probably the most famous device on display at the museum is the Iron Maiden. Similar to a mummy's sarcophagus, the Iron Maiden had spikes placed inside. When the lid was closed, the victim inside died instantly but prison officials eventually designed it so the spikes penetrated less, thus prolonging the pain. Thus the prisoner died of heat stroke first in a prolonged agony of heat and pain.

There now, doesn't a trip to the Museum of Medieval Criminology sound like fun? It is an interesting site, but don't go if you are even slightly squeamish. The Tuscany tourist bureau can give you more information if you dare.
