Is wintertime the right time to motorcycle? Some motorcycle enthusiasts are willing to ride in any conditions, except for snowy or icy roads. Of course, there are those who live in areas where "winter" months are like autumn in other regions. However, many of us decide to store our choppers and Harley Davidson motorcycle boots, when daylight savings time ends, or the wind chill from cruising is unbearable. Here are the steps for storing your motorcycle for wintertime:
1. Gather your supplies
Prior to preparing your motorcycle for winter storage, you will need to gather particular items:
o battery tender
o bike cover
o cleaning items (i.e. soap, water, towels, engine cleaner, chain degreaser, WD-40)
o fuel destabilizer
o oil changing materials
o wax (for paint finishes)
2. Wash your motorcycle thoroughly
Clean your motorcycle inside and out, and then ensure that it has dried totally, before covering it. Here are some important tasks:
o Avoid covering your motorcycle if you are unable to prevent it from being exposed to the elements.
o Apply a wax to paint surfaces of the motorcycle, after washing it.
o Clean the exterior of the engine by using a degreaser.
o Apply chrome polish to chrome surfaces, after washing the motorcycle
o Use a motorcycle cover to keep the dust off of your bike
3. Verify that the engine oil is clean
This is important, as older oil can collect impurities. In addition, conducting an oil change and filter change before a lengthy storage term, can help to increase the life of your engine.
4. Prepare the fuel delivery systems for storage
The process will be different, depending on what type of engine you have. If you have a carbureted engine, twist the petcock until it reaches the "off" position. Then remove the float-bowl drain screw, and use a container to collect the fuel. In the case that you cannot drain the fuel, then again switch the petcock to "off" and then run the engine until it dies.
If you will store your motorcycle for at least half a year, then safeguard cylinder and piston rings from becoming rusted. Remove all spark plugs and then pour in one tablespoon of clean engine oil.
5. Handle your motorcycle's brake, clutch, and coolant fluids
Change your brake fluid and hydraulic fluid, if they need changing before you store your motorcycle for a lengthy period. The reason is that both systems could fail if moisture enters them. Finally, verify that the coolant is fresh, to avoid the formation of deposits.
6. Unload the motorcycle's suspension
You have a few options here. Use your bike's center stand for long-term storage, if it has one. If your motorcycle lacks a center stand, you can use blocks to prop up the motorcycle. Make sure that your motorcycle does not drop in the process!
If you plan to store your motorcycle for the winter, then follow these aforementioned steps to prepare it properly for hibernation. Then in the springtime, your motorcycle will look like you had left it!
